Man arrested for trying to take officer’s gun

By Philip Stahl

NEW MARTINSVILLE, W.Va. –

Two people are behind bars after first being investigated for shoplifting.

New Martinsville Police Chief Tim Cecil said that Benjamin Francis and Cynthia Smith were walking out of Walmart when they were approached by police.

When police looked in their shopping bag, they found marijuana.

That’s when they say that Francis tried to take the officer’s gun and run, but police caught up with him after the failed attempt.

Francis is charged with trying to disarm a police officer, and Smith is charged with attempt to deliver.

Both were taken to the Northern Regional Jail.
