Culp Speaks Out About Shooting

UNIONPORT, Ohio —

Thomas Culp was preparing to meet with his probation officer at his home in Unionport on Tuesday after serving seven years in prison for shooting his wife Connie in the face.

Culp said he would speak with NEWS9's Kelly Camarote about the shooting, even though he claims the media got the story wrong in the past.

"People don't know it was an accident. People think it was deliberate," said Culp. "They say it was a planned murder-suicide. I heard that on the news and it was just never that way."

Culp moved into the home he used to share with his now ex-wife as soon as he was released from prison. He said the story was never told from his perspective.

"I tried to contact every station and newspaper in the Valley," said Culp. "No one returned my letters."

A spokesperson for WTOV9 said the station never received those letters from Thomas Culp.

Immediately after the shooting, the nation became fixated on what happened at the Harrison County bar the couple owned and injuries suffered by Connie and Thomas.

"A few things that were said were completely not true," said Culp. "I really cared about her. This is all B.S. what's come down with the media."

Thomas spoke specifically about a national interview with Oprah Winfrey. Thomas first responded to that interview in a letter sent to NEWS9 this month.

"It stated that I had said about Oprah editing. Connie had told me that Oprah had edited it," said Culp. "She was unhappy with it because I called and talked to her after the interview."

Camarote asked, "Do you still talk to (Connie) now?"

"No. After the interview, I called Connie," said Culp. "Wrote a letter and I told her goodbye forever and that's what I meant."

Culp said after he fully explains what happened during the shooting he wants to move on with his life.
