WHEELING, W.Va. —

Residents flooded post offices Christmas Eve to mail out those last-minute gifts and cards for the holidays. Postal workers said weather played a part in deliveries this year.

"Today, I came out to the post office to check up on my last-minute mail because I know they are closed tomorrow. (I had to) make sure I've got everything off, (and) make sure I got everything in," said Roger Johnson, of Wheeling. "The biggest thing is making sure (people) take care of their business early enough so nothing will be late."

Postal workers said this is one of the busiest times of the year.
"People this year, because Christmas falls on a Tuesday, I think kind of put it off a little longer than they had because they had the weekend coming in for delivery," said Wheeling Postmaster Randal Link.

The latest round of snow that hit the Ohio Valley area and the Midwest caused some delays with mail by air and on the roads.

"For delivery purposes Friday, we had carriers where roads were closed, accidents. (They) were caught in traffic, but we just continue through. (We) keep on delivering until it becomes unsafe to try and get everything home," said Link.

Even though small post offices around the country are closing to save the government money, workers said services are the same. Link said carriers worked the weekend and Dec. 24 to get out those holiday deliveries.

The post offices will be closed Dec. 25, but workers will deliver express mail packages to residences.
