Cuts could be needed to balance the budget

By NEWS9

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio -- Jefferson County officials announced Thursday that more than a $1 million in cuts may be needed to balance the upcoming budget.

Commissioner Tom Graham said budget meetings with each county department should wrap up by the beginning of next week. While the county expects to have $11 million for the upcoming budget, department requests were estimated to cost around $13 million.

"We're going to have to scale that back in terms of what they're asking for," said Graham. "Basically, if we operate on what we operated (on)this year, we should be okay. So there are some reductions that we'll have to make."

Graham said the county was still waiting to see how much money will carry over into next year from this year. The amount could reduce the number of cuts the county would need to make.
