MIAMI VICE
146 Minutes
Sonny Crockett (Colin Farrell) and Rico Tubbs (Jamie Foxx) have made it to the big screen but Miami really didn't! Most of the action takes place in Haiti and Columbia, South America. Gone are the pastels and art deco architecture along with the rolled-up suit jacket sleeves. Also missing is the Jan Hammer theme music of the popular 80's tv series. (Because of it, the soundtrack LP from the tv show was #1 for 11 weeks - the most successful tv soundtrack of all time!) Hammer was invited to do a different type of score but refused. There are no cameos by Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas. Edward James Olmos was offered the role of Castillo but said no. That's what's not in the movie - here's what is...
We find our street savvy duo going undercover to bust an international drug ring. They fly fast planes, drive fast cars and even faster boats, but slowly we get the feeling they might not get out of this assignment alive. After 2 hours and 26 minutes though, I didn't care whether they did or not - I just knew that if they did and there was a MV2, I wouldn't accept the assignment to sit through it if I was alive!
"Miami Vice" is like a modern day western that ends in a shoot-out between the good guys and the bad guys - you know it's going to happen from the very first scene. But DON'T put yourself through this! The movie is as dark as the dealings they get involved with and as stylish as the women the two leads make love to. Farrell's hair is greasy like the drug lords he's out to get and Foxx is totally wasted and second string in a game that goes on too long especially when you know who will win. The movie itself turns out to be the true "vice."
