Defense attorney: Motions filed in Steubenville rape case; witnesses told they wouldn't be prosecuted

By NEWS9

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio —

Court officials in Jefferson County have confirmed that a defense attorney has filed three separate motions on behalf of his client, a juvenile accused of raping a teenage girl.

Walter Madison filed motions for a change of venue, a continuance of the trial and to close the courtroom to the public and the media.

Also developing in the case, three witnesses who testified during a probable cause hearing in the case received word that they would not be prosecuted. They were notified of that just days before they testified, according to documents obtained by Reuters.

In letters from the Ohio Attorney General's office to each witnesses' attorney, the state committed to not prosecuting the three individuals. The witnesses testified on behalf of the prosecution.

On Thursday, Attorney General Mike DeWine told NEWS9 that he made no deal with any of the witnesses involved in the case.

Madison verified the letters' authenticity to Reuters, but declined to comment further.
