STEUBENVILLE, Ohio —

The Department of Defense has announced that a U.S. Marine from Ohio has died in a "non-hostile incident" in Africa.

The government said Tuesday that 20-year-old Lance Cpl. Randy Heck, of Steubenville, died Sunday in Djibouti, Africa.

Heck graduated from Harrison Central High School in Cadiz.

Family members say he is survived by a 2-month-old daughter, whom he never met.

He was assigned to the 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

The defense department said the incident is under investigation.

A call seeking further details went unanswered Tuesday at the Expeditionary Force.
