DEP to hold public meeting on air emissions in West Liberty

By Briona Arradondo

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. —

Residents in West Liberty will meet Thursday night with state and leaders to talk about possible air quality concerns surrounding a proposed Chesapeake Appalachia production facility.

Air quality officials with the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection will hold a public meeting in the basement of West Liberty Christian Church at 6:30 p.m. Some residents said they are indifferent to the construction, while others expressed their worry about air pollution as Chesapeake applies for an air quality permit for Apple Pie Ridge Road.

"I think it's really good for the economy, chance for opening up new jobs and helping the area out a lot, as we can," said Bill Bonar, a West Liberty resident. "I think there'll be good enough of control from the EPA and stuff like that to keep a track of what's going on. I don't think it will bother."

Council members said they hope to work with nearby West Liberty University to use devices to monitor chemical emissions, and some agree with the idea.

"I think…it would help with the clean air and everything," said Sarah Bennett, a WLU student.

The oil and gas company would move equipment to the location, including gas production burners, compressor engines and water tanks, DEP officials said.

"I don't think it will be any worse than what it has been. For the last year (or) year and a half, it's been a bit of a problem. (You) just have to pull over, slow down or whatever, but it seemed like everybody adapted to it OK,” said Bonar.

The mayor said the council hopes DEP representatives will explain what will happen at the site.
