POWHATAN POINT, Ohio —

Police are seeking a person of interest in connection with a Belmont County health center burglary in which prescription drugs were stolen.

The Powhatan Health Center was burglarized around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday. Officials said the thief was able to take advantage of renovations at the business to gain entry.

Powhatan Police Chief Joshua Haught said the thief stole a ladder from a neighboring yard, set it up against the building and entered through a hole in the roof around 5:30 a.m.

Once inside, the burglar tripped an alarm, which instantly notified Wheeling Hospital security. Wheeling Hospital security notified the Shadyside Police Department and the Belmont County Sheriff's Office.

Officials said the thief was not wearing a disguise and said a person of interest has been identified, but his name had not been released as of Wednesday afternoon.

Investigators are still determining how many prescription medications were stolen. A store inventory was not yet complete.

The health center was closed on Wednesday because of the ongoing investigation, and officials said it will reopen on Thursday.
