TRIADELPHIA, W.Va. --

An Ohio County Schools bus lost control on Wednesday, shearing a utility pole in half and heavily damaging a vehicle parked next to a home.

School officials said many of the students on board were on their way to Middle Creek Elementary School when the crash happened on Middle Creek Road just off Route 40 in Triadelphia.

One student was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, and officials said other parents were notified and were able to pick up their children.

The truck was totaled and the damage to the bus is fairly significant. The school bus driver was taken to a hospital for a mandatory drug and alcohol test, Triadelphia police Sgt. James Kendle said.

Middle Creek Road in the area of the crash was expected to remain closed for most of the day while officials remain at the scene. Kendle said he expected the investigation to be complete in a few days.

At noon, wires were dangling from the utility pole, and officials with American Electric Power had cut off electric service to about 330 customers while they made repairs. By around 2 p.m., power had been restored to all but 17 customers. Officials said power is expected to be restored to everyone by 6 p.m.
