DILLONVALE, Ohio —

Weeds are taking over a Jefferson County street, and residents say it's a safety hazard that no one will take responsibility for.

People in Dillonvale said the weeds on Ohio Street are dangerous to drivers because they obstruct the view, and the overgrowth is a health hazard because it's full of poison ivy and wild animals.

"You cannot even see the railroad. You have to pull out across some to see, but the time you pull out you're almost in the street to see what's coming at you and it's not safe," said Donna Seevers, of Dillonvale.

The land belongs to the Wheeling Lake Erie Railway Company, which Seevers said she's called several times, but her pleas for help have gone unanswered by the company.

"(The weeds) have grown out where it's scratching your cars up. You cannot drive up this road very easily and also it's dangerous," Seevers said. "The neighbor almost hit a little boy coming across the railroad tracks because you cannot see what's coming over top the tracks at the end of the road."

Seevers said she and her neighbors have tried to trim the overgrowth themselves, but they can't keep up with it. Residents have also gone to village officials about the problem, but they said the village doesn't have enough money or manpower to clean up the land.

Now, residents said they want answers from the company that's responsible.

"It's not fair that we should have to take care of somebody else's responsibilities trying to get them cut down. That's very upsetting to us," she said.

NEWS9 called the Wheeling Lake Erie Railway Co. several times on Friday morning, but did not receive a response as of noon.
