By Briona Arradondo and  NEWS9

OHIO VALLEY —

Disaster relief is underway after several tornadoesswept through the Midwest and South.

The Ohio Valley was under a severe weather watch for most of Thursday through Friday, but nothing too severe occurred in the area.

The storms that ripped though the country's midsectioncaused severe damage. In Indiana, two people were killed and six were injured, reports said. According to reports Sunday, 37 people have been confirmed dead in the Midwest and South.

Those helping to rescue people in need are working to make sure no one is still trapped. Local emergency management officials said they understand exactly what rescue teams in that region are going through.

"They're probably setting up shelters now for those people," said Lou Vargo, Emergency Management Agency director of Ohio County. "They're worried about the people's pets and having shelters also for people who have medical conditions that they just can't put them in a gymnasium."

Officials said March is one of the worst times for severe weather. Vargo said the best way to prepare for any weather threat is to stay informed and know how to keep yourself safe.
