Dog Ordinance Goes Into Effect Saturday

OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. —

One day away from the enactment of a Vicious Dog Ordinance, the county dog warden said the number of abandoned pit bulls is increasing.

The ordinance goes into effect on Saturday. The new regulations require the owners of pit bulls, bull dogs, and canary dogs to register with an application.

Although dog warden Doug McCroskey said he cannot enforce the ordinance, he said there are numerous dogs arriving at the shelter - about two to three a day.

Owners have until April 15 to register dogs which fall into the city's definition of a vicious dog.

However, owners must also show proof of insurance on the dog. The city is requiring that each dog is covered by a $100,000 liability insurance policy.

Fahey Insurance said that policy will cost an owner $1,200 per year with a $5,000 deductible.

In the meantime, McCroskey said some people are turning their dogs in, while others may be leaving them to run loose.

"We're getting a lot of them that people are not claiming," McCroskey said.

For those who no longer want their pets, McCroskey said owners can drop their pet off at the shelter at no charge.
