Dog that took refuge in cemetery to get new home

By NEWS9 and Ali Myers

HARRISON COUNTY, Ohio —

A dog that took refuge in a local cemetery has attracted the attention of officials who are now trying to find it a new home.

Township Trustee Dan Henry said his wife spotted a headstone that had been dug around, then saw a black dog at the North Township Cemetery in Scio.

"(My wife) had ran into our cemetery workers who said the dog was there, and so they were concerned about him not having food or water," Henry said. "So my wife came back and picked me up."

He said his main concern was that the dog wouldn't have food, water or proper shelter, but he also didn't want the cemetery damaged either.

"Looks to be a nice pup. I just don't want him digging in my cemetery," Henry said.

Henry filed a report with the sheriff's office and contacted the Appalachian Ohio Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

"Later on that evening, one of the deputies was there. He had tried to contact the dog warden in the county to see if there was anything that could be done, but didn't have any success," Henry said.

He said a Harrison County sheriff's deputy is giving the dog a home for now. He said the township will repair the gravesite where the dog tore up flowers around the headstone.
