Domestic Violence Charge Against Steubenville NAACP President Dismissed

Related

UPDATE: On October 19, 2007 the domestic violence charge against Royal Mayo was dismissed in Steubenville Municipal Court. Mayo was ordered to pay court costs.

The president of the Steubenville branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People pleaded not guilty to domestic violence charges Friday.

Royal Mayo and his girlfriend, Tamekia Smith, filed domestic violence charges against each other with Steubenville police on Wednesday.

Police said Smith was going to pick up her children who were at Mayo's Highland Avenue home when an altercation broke out.

Mayo's attorney, Chris Gagan, said "These charges are not true. Mayo is not guilty and we have witness statements that will show at no time did my client engage in domestic violence with Miss Smith."

A judge imposed temporary protection orders for both Mayo and Smith and ordered that the pair have no contact with each other.

A pretrial hearing is set for next month. In the meantime, Gagan said Mayo does still hold the position of NAACP branch president.
