Double house fire ruled arson

By Erica Mokay

COLUMBIANA COUNTY, Oh—

Wellsville fire officials said the called came in around 7 o'clock this morning.

The fire first broke out at 458 14th Street in Wellsville then spread to the house next door.

Fire officials said when they arrived on the scene the first house was completely engulfed in flames, the second was halfway involved.

"We were all in bed, my daughter smelled smoke and yelled 'fire!'"

Joe Canfield and his family were inside their home at 452 14th street when a fire started next door.

That fire quickly spread to their home.

"By the time we got out of the house, the whole side, the outside of the house was already on fire. The house next door was already on fire."

Cell phone video that a neighbor shot shows the fire was fully involved.

Crews from several fire departments were on scene for several hours battling the flames.

Officials said the house that initially caught fire had been vacant for about a year.

Both homes have been ruled a total loss.

"I just don't know what were gonna … everything we own, I mean, I don't even have shoes."

Canfield and his family were able to get out of the house safely.

The state arson investigator was called to the scene.

Wellsville fire officials are asking for the public's help in this case.
