'Doughboy' Continues To Draw Crowds

TRIADELPHIA, W.Va. —

The highly-anticipated, low-budget and local film, "Doughboy," made its debut back in August, and executive producer Kristin Seibert says she's overwhelmed with the reception the film has received.

NEWS9 spoke with Seibert over the phone Saturday, and she said the film resonates with people, spurring them to come back two, three, even four times to see it.

Doughboy is an independent film shot locally in just 19 days on a budget of less than $1 million, and is still racking up numbers in the box office.

"For being week number 6, it's impressive," Marquee Cinemas general manager Mike Anderson said.

Anderson said the script is so good, people can't stay away.

"People are coming back four or five times, where they leave and say ‘hey, have you seen this?’, and a friend says ‘no’ and they say ‘OK, go see it and I'll come with you.’"

Doughboy is fiction, but featured documentary-style footage of real veterans sharing their thoughts on issues like patriotism and the attitudes of young people today.

Anderson said the low-budget film is holding its own against big-time names.

"You know, this week it's competing against Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt and Simba..."

But this upcoming week may be Doughboy's last after a strong run.

Anderson said they hold a weekly meeting with their corporate office to discuss what's doing well, and what needs to go.

He said, week-after-week, Doughboy has gotten the "go-ahead."

"For the fifth straight week its been, ‘we have to keep this one,‘" Anderson said.

It's possible that the film may just be gearing up.

"Rumor has it they just signed a wider distribution deal to get a wider release, so it could leave and come back at a later date," Anderson said.

That rumor is true. Seibert said a larger distribution deal was just signed to get the movie out into theater's nationwide.

She said they'll be hearing back within the coming week whether or not the low-budget movie will be seen by American’s everywhere.
