Downtown Wheeling Demolition Delayed Until Fall

WHEELING, W.Va. —

City officials signed off on an asbestos abatement inspection for the 1100 block of Main and Market Streets in downtown Wheeling Monday.

City Manager Robert Herron said it is the first step in the fairly lengthy demolition project.

"There will be a company that will go into the buildings that the city owns. They will analyze the areas that they feel are asbestos-related, said Herron.

With the inspection likely to take anywhere from 60 to 90 days, Herron said demolition on the former G.C. Murphy, Rite Aid, and other buildings in the block will be postponed until the fall.

However, there are two other demolition projects ongoing right now. Both are on Main Street. One is the former Reichart Furniture Building, last known as the Heritage Port Business Center and the former Dicarlo's Pizza shop in the 1300 block.

Herron said once the inspection is complete, and thoroughly looked through, a demolition contract will be but put to bid.
