Dozens Of Dead Deer Being Dumped On Man's Property

NEW CUMBERLAND, W.Va. —

Dozens of dead deer have been dumped on one man's Hancock County property. Vito Riggi told NEWS9 he wants to know who has been doing it and why.

Last week, while driving along his 250-acre property near New Cumberland, Riggi discovered at least 40 or 50 dead deer scattered just off the road and onto his land. With so many deer being dumped there, the owner said he does not think this was a random act.

“I just couldn't get over how many there were,” said Riggi. “I knew that it couldn't have been someone just throwing away a stray deer, it was someone disposing of a lot of deer."

Riggi said no one seems to be giving him a straight answer as to how so many dead deer showed up. He said he believes the state of West Virginia may be behind it.

"It would certainly appear that it was the state road that dumped them,” said Riggi. “Maybe I'm going out on a limb on that, but I know of no one else that gathers up that amount of deer."

Just minutes away from Riggi's property, he showed our crews where more deer had been being dumped. This property, he said, is owned by the County Commissioners. Alongside all the deer, several pairs of blue rubber gloves were found. Those same rubber gloves also showed up on Riggi's property near the deer remains. No matter who did it, he would like to see something done about it.

"I would like to see it get cleaned up, but no one seems to want to do that," said Riggi. NEWS9 spoke with the Hancock County Game Warden Tom Spence. He said he knows all about the complaint. At this point, he said he believes at this time of year many hunters are randomly and individually getting rid of the deer.
