Drivers line up for apparent gas war in Bellaire

BELLAIRE, Ohio -- —

The Rich and Circle K gas stations in Bellaire, Ohio, are in an apparent gas war, with prices more than 50 cents lower than the national average.

On Tuesday, Rich's gas was $3.10, while Circle K's was $3.09. However, patrons we spoke to say Rich's is cheaper, because they have a 3-cent discount program.

While NEWS9 crews were at the stations, all the pumps at both stations were constantly in use.

Moundsville, W.Va., resident Steve Gonchoff said he can't remember the last time he paid less than $50 to fill up his tank.

"It cost me $35. I sent my son in with $40, and I'm used to always putting $50 in. I had to send him back to get money back," Gonchoff said.

Steve Snyder of New Martinsville, W.Va., said while he wouldn't drive from home to get the bargain prices, if he's in the area the bargain is worth the short trip.

"I have a brother that works here in Bellaire and he keeps telling me the war's going on and I thought, 'Why not?' Because you just cross the bridge in Moundsville and come on up," Snyder said.

He said the apparent price war has been going on for weeks, and prices are down about 20 cents since just last week.

Kayla Taggart of Shadyside, Ohio, said her daughter is currently in a Pittsburgh hospital, and she makes the drive to and from Pittsburgh every day. She said she fills up frequently, but she usually tries to avoid the long lines.

"I usually try to come here at night because in the daytime it's a nuthouse around here, so usually, like last night, we filled up my sister's car at 11 o'clock last night," Taggart said.
