East Liverpool fire ruled suspicious

By Alex Koscevic

COLUMBIANA COUNTY, Ohio —

Beams and ashes are all that's left of an East Liverpool home. No one was inside, as the house has been vacant for years. However, according to Fire Chief William Jones, that's why it's suspicious.

"It was just a vacant structure, suspicious in nature as to how it started. There were no utilities to the structure," Jones said.

Although the fire is still under investigation, Jones said he has some ideas on how it might have started.

"We do have problems with squatters in these vacant homes, so I'm not sure if there were squatters in there, or if someone had set it," Jones said.

Neighbors said that's not an unlikely scenario.

"It's been abandoned for three or four years, but it's all been stripped out. I see people going in," said Sandra Michael, who lives close by.

According to Jones, the fire department responds to about 30 fires a year, and they've responded to eight in July alone. Now, he's asking the community to be on the lookout.

"People need to be more aware of their surroundings and report suspicions activity to help stop this rash of fires," Jones said.
