JEFFERSON COUNTY, OH —

A 9.45 mil levy for the Edison Local school district was shot down by voters Tuesday night. The levy would have generated $3 million a year for the district to prevent staff cuts and keep the district in the black.

Superintendent Dr. Dave Quattrocchi said it was disappointing to hear the levy failed, but school officials were prepared. Officials now need to elimiate $1.5 millin of the district's budget.

"One of our biggest expenses, unfortunately, is transportation," said Quattrocchi. During the upcoming school year, bussing for students grade 9-12 will likely be eliminated.

A pay-to-participate program will also be implemented for all curricular and non-curricular activities. Freshman sports will be eliminated.

"Those students can participate at the JVS and/or varsity level," said Quattrocchi.  The move will also eliminate supplemental positions held by coaches and current teachers.

Edison has lost well over a million dollars in state funding. "The power plant obviously didn't help with another $700,000," Quattrocchi said.

The district was deemed "Excellent" by the Ohio Board of Education for the second year in a row.

Quattrocchi said there likely won't be another levy on the ballot until November. Until then, the district wants to receive community feedback.
