EMA Officials Prepare For Showers

OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. —

On Sunday, Ohio County's Emergency Management Agency was preparing for rain that could bring an increased risk for flooding and rock slides.

"Luckily, for the last two days, we've had some dry weather so those creeks have peaked and are on their way down," said Ohio County EMA Director Lou Vargo. "But with more rain coming, we'll be obviously watching our creeks tonight and over the first part of next week."

Much of the Mountain State was under a flood watch through Monday night. The National Weather Service said up to 2 inches of rain could fall starting Sunday night.

"We had snow earlier in the week. With the warmer temperatures that caused it to melt, that added precipitation was carried away in our creeks," said Vargo. "With an inch, an inch and a quarter of rain, there was a large volume of water going down there."

Vargo expressed his concern for flooding, along with an increased danger of rock slides.

"You come across water that's coming across the roadway. Don't drive on there because it only takes a few inches of water going across the roadways to sweep cars or trucks away," said Vargo. "We've had rock slides on Route 2. We had a rock slide earlier this week on National Road. With all the water undermining those rocks, rock could slide at anytime."

Vargo was encouraging local residents to call their local emergency management agency if they see a rock slide or flooding.
