Explosion Reported At Home In Jefferson County

MINGO JUNCTION, Ohio —

An investigation is under way into what caused an explosion at a home in Jefferson County Sunday morning.

NEWS9’s Kate Davison reported from the scene that at about 11 a.m. Sunday that people in the area of 215 Western Ave. said windows were blown out of the home.

“There was heavy damage. The structure is destroyed," Mingo Junction Assistant Fire Chief Jim Raha said.

The cause was unclear.

"At this point we have no idea the cause of the fire. We've notified the state fire marshal's office and we're going to have someone come down and do an investigation to find out the cause," Raha said.

Three Jefferson County fire departments responded to the scene immediately.

Officials said the home was vacant after the owner died two months ago.

No residents were injured.

"We had one firefighter go down," Raha said.

Raha said it was likely a case of heat exhaustion.

Even after one of their own was carried away, Raha said they still had work to do with flames still in the basement.

"(It’s) kind of hard to get to right now because the roof and the first floor have collapsed into the basement," Raha said.

Raha said the combined crews contained the fire with minimal damage to a nearby home.

"There was some minor heat damage to the residents next door, but it's just on the outside," Raha said.
