Fallen Soldier Portrait Brings Family To Tears

In the weeks following Wheeling native Staff Sgt. Jessie Ault's death in Iraq, his family said they're amazed by the outpouring of support from the community. But what one man did for them, they say, is something they'll remember and have to keep forever.

“You have those low moments from the day my son was killed until you find out things like this it just uplifts you," said Aults father, Ronald.

It hasn't been easy for the Ault family dealing with the loss of their son since his convoy was hit by a roadside bomb in Baghdad on April 9.

On Saturday Gregory Davis, an artist from Weirton, presented the Ault family with a portrait of their son, carved in wood, that he's been working on in the weeks since Ault's death.

The likeness to their son was so exact it brought the family to tears. Although Davis didn't know the Ault family, he said creating their son's portrait created a special bond.

"Sitting at the saw, cutting it out, you know…me and his portrait, just thinking what his life was like." Davis said.

It's that love and support from the community the parents said has helped them through one of the toughest times in their lives.

"There's people who want to help those who have lost loved ones deal with their loss and create a memorial," Davis said.

And for the Ault family, that's exactly what this portrait will become.

"I'll never forget this, I’ll never forget the gentleman that did it and I'll never forget another fallen soldier," said Ronald.

The Ault's said what makes the portrait even more special is that Davis is a local man taking time to honor a local soldier.
