Family Coping With Home Explosion

One Pet Lost In Explosion

"Dear God, I hope everybody's OK," Adam McAdam said.

That was Adam McAdam's thought this afternoon when he received a call from his brother that their grandparents' house had exploded. The Wintersville Fire Department responded to the house on Patton Avenue. Chief Rob Herrington was one of the first on scene.

Herrington said, "A 77-year-old female and an 85-year-old male were home. The female was on oxygen and evidently there was a fire in her bedroom where the oxygen cylinders are stored. The cylinders blew all of the windows out of the back of the house, and there was heavy fire in the back of the house."

Inside the house, just moments earlier were McAdam's grandfather, grandmother, and brother. His brother described to him what it was like inside the explosion.

McAdam said, "(He) was startled by it of course. He ran upstairs and helped get my grandparents out which is great because my grandfather has trouble walking; so, if he hadn't been there, it might of been a lot worse."

Mcadam's family members made it out alive but not unharmed.

Herrington said, "She has some flash burns on the back of her head."

"My grandfather was burned; he's home though. My brother is OK," McAdam added.

The family pets were not as lucky.

"We have a couple burned pets. We have one dog that was in the room with my grandmother that we can't locate, and we're assuming the worse at this point," McAdam said.

As for the house, there is not much left.

"The house is down though. We were able to salvage some pictures but for the most part it was a total loss," McAdam said.

Now, McAdam says his family will do their best to move on.

McAdam said, "Everything's always going to be alright. It's all about just stepping up and getting it done, and we'll do just that."
