Fans Flock To Wheeling For Super Six Tournament

Whether they drove five minutes or five hours, six high school football teams were in Wheeling Friday with one goal: to win the biggest game of the season.

Wheeling Central -- a team which has been part of the championships many times before -- was practicing hard to take the title again.

"It's all the hype ahead of time and then the game after the first quarter. You settle in and you play some hard-nosed football, and that's what we're looking for our kids to do," said Mike Young, of Central Catholic High School.

Some fans drove 300 miles from Monroe County, W.Va., to support James Monroe High School in their first time at the championship.

Lisa Canterbury of James Monroe High School said they chartered two buses for fans and the school's band.

"It was like picking up our high school and bringing it five hours north to Wheeling. So, it's a very big event for our school," Canterbury said.

For any school in the Super Six tournament, it's more than just the players who are looking forward to the games.

"We're excited. Our fans are behind us. Our student body is behind us. Our kids are excited about it all," Young said.
