FBI: Former Football Star Is Serial Bank Robber

Feds Charge Steubenville Native In String Of Heists

PHOENIX, Ariz. —

Federal agents in Arizona have arrested a former Steubenville Catholic Central football standout charged with robbing eight banks in 2006 and 2007.

Michael Yanni, 26, was arrested without incident Monday at his Phoenix home and was indicted in federal court on eight counts of bank robbery.

A criminal complaint obtained by NEWS9 shows an anonymous tip led federal agents to Yanni after he allegedly bragged about pulling off the heists.

He faces up to 20 years in federal prison and $250,000 in fines on each count if convicted.

Yanni was a running back for the Steubenville Central Crusaders. He graduated in 2002.

Authorities said Yanni is suspected of robbing eight banks in Scottsdale, Phoenix, Carefree and Marana between June 13, 2006, and June 29, 2007.

Investigators said they spoke with victim tellers and witnesses and showed them lineups to see if they could identify Yanni as the bank robber. They said the robber typically wore a bandanna and mirrored aviator sunglasses.
