Musicians fight bullying through music

By Aly Cohen

ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio —

The St. Clairsville School District took part in a unique anti-bullying seminar on Monday thanks in part to a band that helps send its message through music.

"I'm going to start killing bullying through music. The message is, 'Never give up, keep going, skin color means nothing,'" Elec Simon said.

Simon, the creator of the musical group Elec Simon and Friends, is a graduate of Buckeye Local High school. He's toured with the Broadway show "Stomp" for the past 10 years, and this group has been traveling the country for about nine years, spreading their message of anti-bullying.

Jaqui Sall, the St. Clairsville Student Action Committee adviser and 11th-grade English teacher, went to high school with Elec, but she said she found his group through Facebook and didn't hesitate contacting him.

"I think at the elementary level, if you catch it early, you can hopefully stop it before it reaches the high school level. But if you don't, it just progresses and it gets worse and it gets worse. And the kids that are bullied, it just gets so low by the time they reach the high school level," she said.

Simon talks about bringing younger children in with music and then the message at the end can really sink in. With high school students, he talks about the long-term consequences they may face, like jail time, being in the wrong place at the wrong time or even death.

All students in the school district from preschool through 12th grade were able to take part in the nationwide tour Monday. In addition to schools, Elec also works with inmates and in juvenile detention centers.
