Fire Ignites At Jefferson County Jail

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio —

It's business as usual at the Jefferson County Jail after the bottom floor, which houses felony prisoners, filled with smoke after fire broke out late Wednesday afternoon.

No one was hurt and the fire was contained to the laundry room.

"All we have is a lot of water. No damage. We’re just shoving the water out. Everything else in the jail is OK. They're checking a couple prisoners for maybe smoke inhalation, but no problem," said Sheriff Fred Abdalla.

The prisoners never had to be evacuated. Fire investigators believe the blaze ignited inside a dryer.

"It was last used at one o’clock. We believe clothes were possibly smoldering inside the dryer and finally ignited -- spreading outside the dryer," said Assistant Fire Chief Sam Ivkovich.

The fire didn't spread far. Sprinkler systems kicked in and went to work.

"They functioned absolutely perfectly -- extinguished the fire and held it in check until we arrived," said Ivkovich.

Crews did have trouble fighting through some heavy smoke and then had issues finding the right valve to get the water shut off, but all things considered, they said it was a good end result.
