Steubenville, OH —

A fire killed a child Thursday in Steubenville.

The blaze started about 5:30 p.m. at a home at 362 Terrace Ave. Emergency crews arrived within minutes, but the tore through the home so quickly that crews didn't have a chance of saving a 5-year-old girl who was trapped on the second floor.

Investigators said there were seven other people home when the fire started: a couple who lived in the apartment next door and family members of 5-year-old Skylar Ellenberger, who lost her life.

Her family said she was a great, fun loving child, who always had a smile on her face. Skylar leaves behind her parents and her four siblings. While the family grieves, investigators are trying to figure out what happened.

"The state fire marshal is on the scene, along with our investigator. That's going to be who is handling the investigation, so until it's done, there is really no information on the cause or any other information yet," said Assistant Chief Carlo Capaldi of the Steubenville Fire Department.

The house is heavily damaged by fire, smoke and water, but officials haven't ruled it a total loss. The Ministry of Salvation Baptist Church is taking donations for the family.
