STEUBENVILLE, Ohio —

A firearms instructor certified through the National Rifle Association reacted to news that NEWS9's Kelly Camarote was approved for a Non-Resident Concealed Carry Permit out of Virginia.

Camarote completed an online course on firearms safety to be eligible for the permit.

"It's invaluable to have live fire associated with any training program," said Butch Mastrantoni, a firearms instructor certified through the National Rifle Association."Otherwise, the individual being trained doesn't have a true idea of what can go wrong."

Mastrantoni invited Camarote to a shooting range in Hancock County Sunday to demonstrate proficiency with a handgun during a firearms safety class. Video from the class showed that the instructors had to guide Camarote on the proper handling of a revolver, on her stance and on aiming the firearm.

"Oftentimes, people think if I just had a gun and could incorporate that gun into my safety plan, that that would simplify my life," said Mastrantoni. "But it doesn't. It increases the responsibility that one must face each and every day they arm themselves."

Another student in the class, Dwayne George, of Weirton, said he was not swayed to follow Camarote's example.

"Teaches you the different safety aspects," said George. "As far as me being a father, they teach you things that you normally might not think about."

After a half-hour on the range with Mastrantoni and another NRA-certified instructor, Camarote demonstrated that she can handle a handgun. She passed the live-fire test by hitting a target 15 times seated and more than 15 times standing.
