COLUMBIANA COUNTY, Ohio —

Beaver Local School District was on a two-hour delay Tuesday after officials said seven buses had tires punctured overnight at the bus garage.

Whether it was a plan to get out of school for the day or just a cruel prank, the person or people who vandalized school buses succeeded in making the morning a little more hectic for mechanics, bus drivers and administrators but did not succeed in disrupting the entire school day.

District officials said all tires on the buses were replaced by noon. One of the buses also had a broken window.

Employees at the district's bus garage made the discovery around 5:30 a.m.

"At that point we went into the mode of calling all the staff, the community and letting them know we will be on a two-hour delay," said Beaver Local Superintendent Kent Polen.

Polen said the mechanics did a "fabulous job getting the buses repaired." Crews took tires off the district's spare buses and put them on the buses used every day. As of noon, a company was on its way to replace the old tires.

It took mechanics about 1½ hours to replace the tires, which led to another issue for the financially squeezed school district.

Polen said, "The only thing it will affect is the price of the tires. We recently came out of a fiscal emergency. We still have to be very conscious of where money comes from and what we're spending on, so it will make things a little tighter towards the end of the fiscal year."

Marty Murray, who's been a bus driver in the district for 10 years, said the two-hour delay wasn't as bad as it could have been, but they're still shocked by what happened.

"It's just kind of hard to believe that a person would actually do that, just to get a two-hour delay or a whole day off, so everyone was just in disbelief," Murray said.

Polen said officials were at the scene Tuesday morning and the vandalism remains under investigation.

There was a another incident a few years back in which Beaver Local buses were vandalized in a similar way, but Polen said district officials plan to take measures to make sure this type of incident doesn't happen again.
