FOLLANSBEE, W.Va. -- A man accused of breaking into cars outside Cindy's Fusion Fitness in Follansbee was chased and caught by a fitness instructor Wednesday.

"I didn't let him out of my sight," said Carrie Laase-Whitehead. "I wasn't going to let him go."

Laase-Whitehead said she spotted the man inside her friend's car. After her friend, Katie Brown, pulled the man out of the car, he ran down an alley behind Cindy's Fusion Fitness.

Laase-Whitehead followed the man while wearing unlaced hunting boots and holding a cell-phone to her ear. Brooke County emergency dispatchers stayed on the phone with her during the entire chase.

"We went down to the wall, turned toward that parking lot," said Laase-Whitehead. "He actually ran into a dumpster, so that slowed him down a little bit. Then, we cut across the street. We ended up on the top of the stairs and that's when he said, 'I can't run anymore.'"

Laase-Whitehead said she stayed with the man until police got to their location.

Police identified the man as Matthew Leavitt, who was arrested and charged with breaking and entering of an auto and public intoxication.
