BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio —

Multiple people were injured in a two-vehicle crash in Belmont County Friday morning.

The crash happened on State Route 800 north around 9 a.m.

Sgt. Don Britton of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said a van carrying nine passengers was headed northbound when a Volkswagen coming off Old National Road ran a stop sign and headed into the path of the oncoming vehicle. Britton said the van crashed into the Volkswagen and continued on for a short distance before it finally came to a stop off the side of the road. Multiple people were injured.

"Four were taken to local hospitals. The extent of the injuries, I don't know," Britton said.

Officials said a fifth person was flown by medical hospital to UPMC in Pittsburgh with a head trauma.

A reconstruction team is working to process the scene.
