Dozens of residents of Deliso Manor in Follansbee could not go home Wednesday night.

Emergency officials in Brooke County said the generator room in the basement of the building caught on fire.

All five floors of the apartment building filled up with the smoke, and for the safety of the residents, fire crews evacuated the entire building.

Crews said they were able to contain the fire quickly because of how close they were when the call came in.

"We just finished up finishing cleaning up storm damage right across the street when the call came in," said Follansbee Fire Chief Larry Rei

Most of the residents are staying with family, and about a dozen more are staying in a shelter in Follansbee and the Brightwood Nursing Home.
