Former Boy Scout leader fights back

By Alex Koscevic

BRIDGEPORT, Ohio --

It’s made national news -- a mother who was dismissed as a Boy Scout leader because she’s gay. Now, Jennifer Tyrrell is hoping the support she’s receiving will change the Boy Scouts of America’s policy, which does not allow gay leaders.

"If you can imagine waking up every day and being told that you can't do something just because of who you are, or you can't participate in your child's life,” said Tyrrell.

She said the Boy Scouts knew all along of her sexual orientation.

"I can't imagine in 2012 people saying it's OK to discriminate against anyone, but the BSA does,” Tyrrell said.

Now, she's looking to get the policy amended, and she's not the only one. Thousands of others agree it's time for a change.

"I have over 268,000 signatures in two weeks,” Tyrrell said. “A lot of people are ready, I think, for this change, and they're one of the last remaining organizations to discriminate."

Terrell has no set number of signatures she's looking to reach, but when she's ready, she'll take them to the Boy Scouts. And if they don’t budge, she said she’ll consider taking the matter to court.

In 2000, the Supreme Court reviewed the policy of the Boy Scouts and decided that because the organization is private, they are permitted to decide who can and cannot be a leader.
