Former Congressman Wilson suffers stroke in Fla.

By Eric Minor

Eastern Ohio Congressman Charlie Wilson suffered a stroke while in Florida last week, according to a statement released Tuesday by Wilson's family.

Initial reports from NEWS9's news partner David Blomquist at WWVA-AM radio were that Wilson's situation was "dire," although the family's statement says they're hopeful he will make a full recovery.

Wilson reportedly suffered a brain aneurysm Friday while vacationing in the Orlando area and has been in a medically induced coma while he's being treated.

"The family is hopeful that he will make a full recovery," read a statement emailed to NEWS9. "They also appreciate the thoughts and concerns and ask that you continue to keep him in your prayers. During this difficult time, the family asks that you respect their privacy."

Wilson, a two-term Democrat, lost reelection in 2010 to Republican Bill Johnson. Wilson attempted to unseat Johnson in a rematch election in 2012, but lost. Prior to his tenure in Congress, Wilson served in both the Ohio House of Representatives and in the state Senate.

Wilson turned 70 on Jan. 18.
