The former chief deputy clerk of Harrison County Juvenile Court was arraigned Thursday on charges of theft in office and tampering with records.

Cathy Rose was indicted by a grand jury earlier this year. Thursday, Rose pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation began investigating Rose's bookkeeping after embezzlement allegations arose in January.

Rose's last day on the job was Jan. 27.

Her attorney, Francesca Carinci, said she anticipates the case will go to trial.

"The client maintains her innocence -- that she did nothing wrong. So, we don't anticipate any please because she is innocent of all these charges," Carinci said.

Special Prosecutor Chris Berhalter said the specifics of the case cannot be released at this time, other than that the theft charge stems from money that was going to Harrison County Juvenile Court.

In court, Berhalter, who is representing the state, asked that Rose have no contact with any employees of the Juvenile and Probate Court offices.

"In any criminal case we make sure the victim as well as any potential witnesses are not harassed in any way by the defendant in the case," Berhalter said.

Rose faces a maximum of 6 1/2 years in prison if found guilty on both charges.

A trial date is expected to be set within the next 60 days. Stay with NEWS9, WTOV9.com and WTOV9 Mobile for continuing coverage.
