A bankruptcy court judge in the district of Delaware signed a motion on Thursday that voids the former labor agreement between RG Steel and the United Steelworkers union.
The development is something that has been expected by the union, but the motion signed by Judge Kevin Carey makes it official.
The motion will put a modified labor agreement into place. The new agreement means all benefits and insurance will cease by Aug. 31 if they haven't already, according to agreements between the union and the company.
With all of the changes and questions, steelworkers are now turning to a new website to keep each other informed.
The website was created for the USW Local 1190, where president Ernie Gambellin said the phone calls have been virtually nonstop because of RG Steel's bankruptcy and its ramifications.
"A lot of phone calls have come in now, and people are saying they can't even get through to the hall," Gambellin said.
He said the website will help guide and inform his fellow members about the many changes to their insurance and benefits. The website is http://www.myuswlocal.org/sites/us/lu1190/
"This individual Joe Baily, he came up with this website. It's through the international union, and when we find out information about anything pertaining to our union members -- whether it be insurance, 401(k)s, retirements -- you can go to this website and read the information there. And then if you have further questions, you can call the union hall," Gambellin said.
The union is also hosting meetings with outside agencies to inform members about options for assistance, while union leaders work out labor agreements with Mountain State Carbon.
"They started Monday in Pittsburgh, and we expect to meet with them next week. It's in the very early stages," Gambellin said.
"Those meetings are in the infant stages and don't want to get anyone's hopes up as far as Mingo and for an answer. It's just so early. Anything could happen," he said
The union held at informational meeting at 4 p.m. Thursday sponsored by Wells Fargo. The meeting was expected to give steelworkers who have their 401(k) invested in that company a chance to ask questions and figure out how to proceed with their investments.
