WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. –
Months after the West Liberty Post Office ceased operations; the building is no longer vacant.
The town of West Liberty has purchased the building and has now made it their new home for the Town Hall.
“We look forward to serving the community, being available every day. We have office hours now, so if anyone should need anything in the town, we are now open,” said Mayor Rosey Miller.
The town had to demolish their former town hall, a church building in the late 1700’s, just down the street back in 2010.
“It was so sad, it was historic, but its life expectancy was up, and we had to tear it down before it created a safety hazard,” said Miller.
Miller said in a tour with NEWS9’s Philip Stahl that the town bought the post office building for $25,000 back in December. However, they had to get a loan for the building, because they didn’t have it. But, Miller said she’s hoping the building will soon be paid off.
“We are working on a lease agreement between Chesapeake Energy. Right now the town owns some 14.5 acres, and they are willing to give us $2,000 an acre, with 18 percent royalty,” said Miller.
The total is roughly $28,000, therefore paying off the building.
With the building now in the town’s hands, Miller is working to secure grant money for several projects.
“We need to get new lighting, new windows, exterior doors and a handicapped restroom, just to name a few,” said Miller.
The Tin Mill Federal Credit Union, currently located on the campus of nearby West Liberty University also plans to move into the front part of the building in the summer.
