Former Teacher Found Guilty Of Poisoning Baby Daughter

A former Bellaire High School teacher faces life in prison after a jury found her guilty of trying to poison her baby daughter with lead.

On Monday, a Lake County, Ohio, jury found Erin Hendrix guilty of 13 out of 22 charges, concluding Hendrix gave her daughter lethal doses of lead. Hendrix's bond was revoked by a judge, and she faces life in prison with the possibility of parole after 15 years.

Nearly three years ago, Belmont County officials started investigating accusations that Hendrix tried to poison her then 6-month-old daughter with lead.

"Our concern was where did this lead, or chemicals, come from," said Belmont County Sheriff Fred Thompson.

The bizarre case first led police to Hendrix's place of employment -- Bellaire High School -- where Hendrix taught science at the time.

"We went to the school; the school cooperated. We looked at the classroom and the lab and tried to confirm if chemicals came up missing out of the school," Thompson said.

But no charges came out of Belmont County. Instead, the investigation spanned to the Cleveland area, where the family had moved. Officials said the family moved first to Cuyahoga County, then to Lake County. There, investigators said the child was hospitalized again with a similar illness and charges were filed.

Hendrix previously lost her teaching license and the child, who is now 3, continues to recover in a foster home.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for March 15. Stay with NEWS9, WTOV9.com and WTOV9 Mobile for continuing coverage.
