Forum to focus on W.Va. child care subsidies

By The Associated Press

GLEN DALE, W.Va. —

West Virginia State Senate President Jeff Kessler is hosting a forum on child care needs in the Ohio Valley this week.

The event is set for Friday at the Glen Dale United Methodist Child Development Center and will be followed by a community planning meeting. It's being put on by Catholic Charities West Virginia and West Virginia Healthy Kids and Families.

Organizers say community leaders will hear testimony from families and from Child Care Center staff on the impact of proposed eligibility changes to a subsidy program that helps working parents afford day care.

In December, Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin said he would delay changes that could have ended the subsidies for an estimated 1,425 children.

A family of four would have lost aid, for example, if its annual income exceeded about $33,500.
