Four Local Students Head To National Spelling Bee

A record 286 spellers are participating in this year's 80th Annual Scripps Spelling Bee, four of whom are from the Ohio Valley.

Most competitors are from the United States and Canada, but participants also flocked to Washington, D.C., from the American Samoa, the Bahamas, Europe, Guam, New Zealand, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The students had a busy morning on Wednesday and took a written exam to help narrow down the competition.

The spelling bee has a reputation of being nerve-wracking, and the winner receives a $35,000 scholarship, savings bonds and reference books.

The final round is carried live on ESPN.

All spellers must be under age 16 and must be in eighth grade or less to participate in the two-day event.
