Garage Fire Destroys Hancock County Family's Christmas Gifts

NEW MANCHESTER, W.Va. —

Fire ripped through a Hancock County family's garage Wednesday night, destroying everything inside including all the stuff they were keeping tucked away for Christmas.

It happened on Pittinger Road in New Manchester. The family lost a lot in that garage, but told NEWS9 they are very thankful that no one was hurt.

There's nothing left behind but a burnt out shell, but when multiple fire crews first got on scene the garage fire was raging.

"Flames were coming about 25 feet out of the roof. It was completely engulfed. Flames were just coming out everywhere," said New Manchester Volunteer Fire Chief Roger Stewart.

Usually the homeowner keeps a wood burner going in the garage, but the fire chief doesn't think that's what started the fire.

"The wood burner had no fire in it so he wasn't using it at this point," said Stewart.

Investigators aren't sure what sparked the fire. They don’t believe it’s suspicious.

"Not at this time. We're still investigating it," said Stewart.

Stewart said he isn’t planning to call the state fire marshal in for help.
