Gas Prices Down On Memorial Day; Locals Weigh In

BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio —

Gas prices in Ohio are well below the national average of $2.75 a gallon, but many drivers in the Ohio Valley are still hoping those numbers will drop.

For the first time since 2005, gas prices are on the decline during Memorial Day weekend.

"It's the most popular subject next to politics I guess. I wish they were lower, but there's not a whole lot we can do about it.You have to drive to work, get from point A to point B," said Harry Wright, a Martins Ferry resident.

The national average, $2.75, is 30 cents cheaper than last year during Memorial Day weekend. Last year, gas prices were on the rise.

Drivers said they still feel they are paying too much.

"It should be cheaper. I think it should be down by two dollars actually. You'd save a lot more on gas," said Dane Koch.

Koch returned this week from New York, and said his wallet is full now that he's back in the valley.

"In the Hamptons, it was about $3.80 a gallon. Which compared to here, it's $2.68," said Koch.

"With the Gulf situation, I can only see them going up. Not immediately, but down the road, I think it will increase," said Wright.

Analysts are no longer predicting the $3 a gallon high this summer, but local residents said if they do travel, they will be staying a lot closer to home.
