Gas service disrupted for hundreds in Powhatan Point

By Kate Davison and  NEWS9

POWHATAN POINT, Ohio —

As temperatures dropped Sunday night, so did Powhatan Point's gas service.

Mayor Mark McVey said East Ohio Dominion's gas lines coming into the village had a disruption affecting some 700 residents.

"It was the first night that it was freezing …It was 33 that night," McVey said.

Diana Stender's mother lives in the village and went without heat for two days.

"She called me and said they were without any heat, and she was worried about it because she's older," Stender said. "What are the odds? Probably next week we're going to have pretty weather again."

Company crews were hard at work fast, McVey said. About 50 workers were brought in to shut off hundreds of meters before restoring gas to the main line.

McVey said service workers had to visit each home and check appliances for any signs of gas buildup. He said, "That's a timely process. It took about 2 ½ days."

But it wasn't an easy job for crews or residents.

"She couldn't leave here, because they told her she had to stay in the house so [that] when they turn the heat back on, somebody had to be here so they could light all the pilot lights," Stender said.

McVey said as of Wednesday afternoon, about 30 homes were still without gas, but it's not from lack of effort.

"Most of (the residents) are either on vacation, and then we have some rental homes that aren't rented out," McVey said.
