Grant funding to help local airport make improvements

By Josh Eachus

MARHSALL COUNTY, W.Va.-- Airports in several West Virginia counties will be sharing $795,000 in federal funding to help upgrade their facilities.

Marshall County’s airport will be getting $495,000 to build 10 new T-hangars, each of which can hold one plane. Right now, they only have one group hangar.

This grant is a first of its kind for the Marshall County airport, and it's been a long time coming, the airport manager tells NEWS9 they applied for this money over three years ago.

Officials said this is a big thing not just for them but for the local economy, including those involved with oil and gas drilling.

"I have a long list of people that have given me their names that are interested as soon as we get them built in housing their airplanes here, so I think it's going to be a good thing for the airport and aviation in general in the northern panhandle," said Susan Board, the airport’s manager.

The airport has also gotten some money from the state, and they are approaching local leaders about an additional $100,000 to help complete the project.

They hope to have the new hangars up by next summer.
