Grant Money Will Increase Smoking Ban Inspections

OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. —

Although the revised smoking ban has been in place in Ohio County for nearly five years, some businesses may need a reminder of the rules.

"Cigarettes on the floor, ashtrays on the desk, specifically used ones, stuff like that and unfortunately we do find them," said Wheeling-Ohio County Sanitarian Chuck Fisher.

The West Virginia Bureau of Public Health granted the Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department $5,000 to go beyond the typical 9 to 5 inspections.

"It provides a little extra cash for us to be able to do those inspections on odd hours, odd times," said health department administrator Howard Gamble.

The increased inspections will take place over a 10-month program. Health officials said they believe by the end at least 95 percent of businesses will be compliant.

"In the beginning, will we find problems? Yes. We'll find either stickers are missing or people are actually smoking or they don't understand the regulation," Gamble said.

He said many common infractions are an easy fix, with a sticker placed in a window or a sign hung on the wall, but there is also the occasional business caught with a more serious violation.

"For example a business at 5:00 [p.m.] when they shut down, believes that everything's now, ok we can smoke. Well no you cannot smoke in the building, period," Gamble said.

The program will help the county prepare for the possibility of an increased smoking ban. For now, they're focusing on the businesses that are already part of the rules.
