Hancock Co. Schools addresses heating problem at elementary school

By Kelly Camarote and  NEWS9

CHESTER, W.Va. —

Students at Allison Elementary School in Hancock County are back in class after heating problems forced administrators to cancel school Tuesday.

Superintendent Sue Smith said workers hope to have a new boiler and heating system up and running by Friday.

"The original schedule was to have the heating system on by the 15th. Well, unfortunately it got very cold this week," Smith said.

District workers brought in portable heaters to warm the building as a temporarily solution, but some parents were concerned about the safety of the heaters.

Smith said, "I had concerns they were using space heaters and space heaters to me is not what they're actually using. They're using electrical heaters … But I had to check it out for the parents that called me."

Smith said the fire chief inspected the portable heaters Tuesday night and said everything the school is doing is up to code.

She said the school was warm enough with the portable heaters for students to be back in class on Wednesday. Students that NEWS9 spoke with during school agreed.

Smith also cleared up concerns about other conditions brought on when construction work began this year, like the interior ceilings being out.

"They are putting the ceilings obviously back in," Smith said.

She said the obstacles are being overcome with creativity.

"A couple of days ago our music teacher (and) our phys. ed. teacher incorporated math and academics into their programs and combined those three and worked together. And it was very interesting and the kids really had a great time with it," Smith said.
